Welcome to Activate World Season 5! We are excited to begin a new season with a focus on different business and organizational models. Some may be new, while others have been around for a while, but are getting a fresh look.

In the U.S. workforce, employee engagement stands at 34 percent while 13 percent are actively disengaged. Although there is some slight improvement, engagement should be higher.  Different organizational models have the potential to increase employee engagement.

In recent research by Edelman, 56 percent of consumers have no respect for CEOs who remain silent on social issues. Add  75 percent of US workers between the ages of 18 and 34 expect their employer to take positions on social issues. A new expectation of business is to challenge traditional structures. It’s time to look at other models that drive positive engagement between business and society.

Definitions vary, but most people agree that a business model describes how a company creates and captures value. It’s a system whose various functions interact, often in complex ways, to determine the company’s success.

By exploring different business and organizational models, we hope to determine what factors create more activating dynamics for teams and individuals.

Hierarchical organizations exist to establish order. While some innovators pursue different paths, many business leaders stay with the historical models. Today, cooperatives are being reconsidered and implemented. Holacracy is more than a fad, and Teal and Sociocracy are being tested and embraced. Although credit unions have been around since 1849, they remain an organizational innovation in the financial industry. Nothing is pure as some pursue a blend.

During the fifth season of the Activate World podcast, we will engage with the leaders and experts of these unique businesses and organizational models. Key questions will be: What works? What are the leadership challenges? Are team members more engaged within the organization and community? What are some examples of successful outcomes across the different models?
